On behalf of the organisation Sports for Schools, top triple jumper Kola Adedoyin visited West Hill in January. First of all, all the children were put through their paces with a sponsored exercise circuit and later on were treated to Kola talking to them for half an hour about how he got started as an athlete and how he works hard to achieve success. E Safety Superheroes
Just before Christmas, West Hill had an extremely important visitor, Superman! He came to challenge the children to create their own E-Safety Superheroes to keep everyone safe when using the internet. He flew in at 9am to set the challenge and only gave the children until 11am to produce their creations. They really thought hard about what qualities their superhero should have, with guidance from Superman of course:
So for an hour and a half the children were very busy designing their superheroes, deciding on his or her superpowers and coordinating as a team to determine who should present their creations back to Superman at the second assembly.
The pressure was on! All the classes from Year 1 to Year 6 produced amazing superheroes using a vast array of materials and then presented them back to Superman and the rest of the school. Their superheroes’ powers were exactly what Superman wanted to see and hear about. Some had x ray glasses to filter out people they don’t know on the internet; others had fire boots to destroy viruses, or claws to turn off bad websites! Here are photos of the pupils showing their superheroes to Superman and the rest of the school:
The teaching staff have been very busy recently creating some wonderful book corners for quiet reading. Here is a selection of them:
Sports Day 2015
This year we held Sports Day at King George’s Park. Here are lots of photos of our day in seven slideshows.
Book Week 2015
The children and teaching staff enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters!
The older children paired up with the youngest children to read a book together.
Author Tony De Saullles (Horrible Science Series) visited the school and talked to the children about his books and showed them how to illustrate lots of different ideas.
Author Fran Preston Gannon also came in, read to the children and talked to them about her writing.
What do the pupils at West Hill think about their learning?
We recently asked pupils for their feedback on how they learn at West Hill. These are some of their responses:
“I like it because when I was at my old school it was boring and you couldn’t ask anyone about your ideas, but here you can, and you can ask people for help if you are stuck.”
“It’s interesting and fun. The playgrounds are big and have equipment and I have fun friends.”
“I like literacy and numeracy because it’s interesting and fun. They help me by showing me how to do things.”
“I love learning because it is fun and it brings people together.”
“These lessons (music and singing) are my favourites because they bring me joy.”
“I enjoy Art because it’s a way to express your feelings.”
“I love to learn.”
“I like learning all the time.”
We asked if they like challenging activities and they gave these responses:
“Yes, because they fill your brain with knowledge.”
“I like challenging myself and trying new things even if they are hard.”
“A challenging activity really helps me and challenges my brain.”
“If I always do stuff that’s easy I will never improve.”
“If I get it wrong I will learn from my mistake.”
“I get focused and I’m stepping up for a challenge. I don’t like losing.”
Carnival of Colour
In 2014 West Hill hosted an amazing Carnival of Colour for the parents, complete with a steel band and maracus to get us in the party mood. The sun shone and the children were all dressed up their artwork and really enjoyed parading and dancing around the playground. Thank you very much for all the parents who came to support our carnival and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! For those parents and carers who were unable to attend we took lots of photos, a selection of which you can see below.
And preparing for the day….
A group of pupils took part in Putney District Sports Competition in June. Their competitive spirit was very much in evidence and congratulations must go to Ignatius in Year 5 and Clayton in Year 4 who both won their events!
